Descript pricing: media hours are the number that matters

Descript’s pricing page is clearer than most in this category. It names its units, which is more than a lot of AI tools manage.

The problem is that there are three of them, and the one that decides your tier is not the one in the headline.

The tiers

The annual discount is real and it narrows as you go up: 33% off on Hobbyist, 31% on Creator, 23% on Business. Worth knowing if you were assuming the percentage holds.

Ten media hours is less than it sounds

This is the number to plan around, and it is the one people underestimate.

A media hour is an hour of audio or video you upload and work with. Not an hour of finished output. If you record a 45-minute conversation and it takes you two takes, that is an hour and a half against your allowance before you have edited anything.

Ten hours a month sounds generous until you count the way you actually work. A weekly hour-long podcast with a bit of overrun is comfortably eight to twelve. One person recording two videos a week, with retakes, is in the same territory.

I would treat Hobbyist as a plan for finishing a handful of things a month, not for a regular production schedule.

The upgrade is usually forced by export, not by hours

Here is the detail I would want to know before subscribing: 1080p export is Hobbyist, 4K is Creator.

If you are putting video on YouTube and you care about 4K, the ten-hour tier is not available to you at any usage level. You are on Creator at $24 a month annually, and the media hours were never the reason.

That is a clean forcing function and Descript is not hiding it. But it means the honest entry price for most video work is $24, not $16, and comparisons that quote the cheapest tier are quoting a plan a lot of people cannot use.

The per-person part

Every tier is priced per person per month, and the team sizes are caps on how many people you can add, not people included. Creator says “scale to a team of 3 (billed separately)”. Billed separately is doing real work in that sentence.

Three people on Creator is $72 a month annually, not $24. Five on Business is $250, not $50. That is normal for seat pricing, but the page presents the number as a plan feature rather than a multiplier, and it is easy to read the wrong way when you are comparing against a flat-rate tool.

What it actually costs you

Work out these three, in this order:

Do you need 4K? If yes, you start at Creator and skip the rest of this.

How many media hours do you genuinely use? Count uploads, including retakes and the recordings you abandon. Not finished minutes.

How many people log in? Multiply. That is your bill.

For one person publishing 1080p a few times a month, $16 annually is a fair price and Descript is a good tool at it. For a two-person team doing weekly 4K video, you are at $48 a month annually and should compare that against alternatives rather than assuming you are on the cheap plan.

Descript also has a free tier, which is a reasonable way to find out how fast you burn media hours before you commit to a year.
